The Reverend Barnum McCarty served as Rector of St. Mark's for twenty-three years until his retirement in 1995.
It was during this period that St. Mark's Episcopal Day School was reorganized and began growing into the quality educational institution it is today. Also, during this period Leatherbury Hall was rebuilt, the Church building was remodeled, and several additional properties were acquired.
After his retirement Barnum was called to be Interim Rector at St. Thomas' Church for a year and a half. He then was called to St. Peter's, Fernandina Beach to be Interim Rector and Consultant for a year. Most recently he served for a year as Interim Dean and Consultant for St. John's Cathedral.
Prior to his call to St. Mark's, he was rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Panama City, Florida (1962-1971), Director of Diocesan Youth and Camp Weed (1959-62), and Rector of Trinity Church in Apalachicola (1956-1959). After one year at Florida State University, he transferred to the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee where he earned his B.A. (1954) and his M.A. (1956). In 1997 the University awarded Barnum his Doctor of Divinity degree.
Throughout his service Barnum has remained active in Diocesan as well as National Church affairs. He is presently on the National affairs including the Standing Committee as well as the Executive Council of the Executive Committee of the National Episcopal Church.
Barnum is married to Betty Ann Roberts of Tallahassee, Florida and they have three grown daughters - Beth, Shannon and Sarah - and five grandchildren.
