Letter to the Parish From Fr. David Killeen

June 16, 2010

Dear Members and Friends of St. Mark’s:

I am writing to let you know that I have accepted a call to serve as priest in charge of St. John’s Church in Tallahassee. My last Sunday at St. Mark’s will be August 8.

St. John’s, which first worshipped together in 1829, is one of the historic parishes of the Diocese of Florida. In recent years, they have experienced several difficult leadership transitions. Their last rector departed in April. Rather than go through a lengthy search process, the congregation, guided by the Bishop, has elected to call me as priest in charge, with the expectation that I will serve as rector in the future.

While Carol and I are excited about this new opportunity, saying goodbye to you will not be easy. In our friendships with you, we have experienced the love of Christ. From day one, you welcomed us into the St. Mark’s family. With so many of our family members living far away, this made such a difference in our lives! During our time at St. Mark’s, we have been awed by how you live out your faith in our community and the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Jon, who is not only the finest mentor that I’ve had as a priest, but also as a man. I am a better husband and father for having served alongside him. Rev. Sandy is a true colleague and friend who kept me laughing every day. It was also a privilege to be a part of the St. Mark’s staff, which is second to none when it comes to faithful and creative service.

I have also been moved by the dedication of Cathy Hardage and the Day School faculty and staff. The academics at the school are rigorous, but the most important part of the school to me is what my son Danny calls the “St. Mark’s Way,” or character education. I see the fruits of the Spirit in my children’s lives and this is in no small part to the love and care they received at the Day School.

On behalf of Carol and the boys, I thank you for your kindness, countless acts of quiet service, and genuine love of God. We will miss you dearly.

With confidence that God will do infinitely more through St. Mark’s that I can ask or imagine, I am,

Yours faithfully,

The Rev. David C. Killeen
Associate Rector
