Alpha

What is Alpha? Alpha is a ten-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith for our lives today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with loads of opportunity for debate and discussion. The style of Alpha is informal, friendly and non-pressured. On the Alpha course, no question is too simple or too controversial.

Alpha is enjoyed and appreciated as much by those who have never set foot in a church as it is by those may be coming back to church after being away for some time, as it is by the regular churchgoer looking at renew a cooled-off faith. No matter what their background, whether investigating Christianity for the first time or revisiting and reviving their faith, participants get a lot out of an Alpha Course.

Each week people meet together for a meal, a talk on topics such as "Who is Jesus?", "Why Did Jesus Die?", and "How Can I be Sure of My Faith?”, followed by small group interaction. There is also a day or weekend retreat midway through the course.

There are over 5000 Alpha courses running in the US and about 1,000,000 people in America and Canada have already participated.

Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for everyone, but especially for those who want to investigate Christianity for the first time, for new Christians, for newcomers to the Church, and for those who want to revive and renew their faith by brushing up on the basics of Christianity. People attend Alpha for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith or have never felt truly alive in their faith. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives.

If Alpha sounds like it might be the right course for you at this point in your journey of faith, call St. Mark’s Alpha Coordinators, David and Taffy Remisiewicz at 388-4256.

Alpha begins with a dinner introduction followed by a ten week course that meets weekly. An optional weekend away is held in the middle of the ten weeks. A donation is asked for meals.
